James Hardie Factory Visit

Monday, May 14, 2018

Design Partners was invited to James Hardie Factory, looking at fibre cement products and how they are produced at their factory in Penrose.

Having been supplying fibre cement for 75 years in New Zealand, it was fascinating to see the historic factory site - the traces of old railways where they have delivered products in between two sites and around the nation.

The Design team were taken through the factory seeing the process of fibre cement manufacture, starting with basic kneading, flattening, and then gelatin cutting to sizes before being steamed.

Being used to the end products, seeing the basic ingredients of washed coarse sand and locally sourced wood pulp, as well as green treatment for wastewater was interesting. The journey finished off with great lunch which has been prepared by James Hardie team.

As Architects, these field visits help us understand the process of creation of construction products so that we can make better informed decisions on identifying and specifying environmentally friendly products.
